VODAFONE : CELLULAR IOT IN CONSERVATION
In order to protect endangered and threatened species , conservationists need to fully understand behaviour of those species , and which habitats are key to their survival . Over the past few decades , Scottish harbour seals have seen a dangerous drop in population , declining by as much as 90 %.
The Sea Mammal Research Unit ( SMRU ) is working to understand the environmental factors that are harming the seal population , but finding non-invasive ways to track and monitor wild animals has long been a problem .
Telecommunications giant Vodafone is currently working with the SMRU as part of its project to bring cutting-edge connectivity to conservation efforts around the world . “ We were the first people to put a telemetry tag on a seal back in the mid-80s ,” explains Bernie McConnell – Deputy Director of the SMRU . “ You stick it to the seal and it ’ ll tell you where it ’ s going and how far it ’ s diving .
