HUTCHISON TELECOM AND HUAWEI PARTNER FOR GREEN 5.5G STRATEGY
Hutchison Telecommunications ( Hong Kong ) Limited ( HTHK ) and Huawei International Company have teamed up to advance green network deployment and sustainability in the telecoms industry . At the Mobile World Congress 2024 in Barcelona , the companies signed an MoU focusing on a collaborative effort towards a 5.5G green strategy .
HTHK will implement artificial intelligence ( AI ) energy-saving solutions to optimise the energy efficiency of 5G base stations across Hong Kong , aiming for a “ zero bit , zero watt ” energy-saving goal . This initiative seeks to reduce energy consumption while maintaining service quality .
Kenny Koo , Executive Director and CEO of Hutchison Telecommunications Hong Kong Holdings Limited , emphasised the integration of advanced AI solutions to regulate power consumption and reduce carbon emissions .
Huawei will contribute its ICT technology and 30 years of experience to the partnership . Yu Yang , President of SRAN Product Line of Huawei , stressed the importance of promoting green network deployment and sustainable development in the telecoms industry . The collaboration aims to reduce approximately 400,000kg of carbon dioxide emissions annually through smart energy-saving solutions , leveraging AI technology to adjust network settings during low traffic periods .
HTHK will also deploy Huawei ’ s MetaAAU energy-saving antennas in high-traffic areas , further reducing power consumption during idle periods .

Reducing packaging waste is another area where mobile companies are making strides towards sustainability . Companies are exploring minimalist packaging designs , using recycled or biodegradable materials , and eliminating unnecessary accessories to reduce the environmental impact of packaging . Moreover , some manufacturers are experimenting with innovative packaging solutions , such as plant-based materials or reusable packaging options . Samsung has pledged to remove all single-use plastics from its mobile phone packaging by 2025 , for example .
